Access to Finance – A key driver for SME development. How the Enterprise Europe Network supports romanian companies

In an economic context shaped by digital and green transitions, volatility and increasing international competition, access to finance is one of the most important success factors for SMEs and start-ups. Financing is not just about capital, but about the opportunity to innovate, test new ideas, enter international markets and build strategic partnerships.

For many Romanian companies, however, identifying suitable funding sources and navigating European procedures remain major challenges. In this context, the Enterprise Europe Network (EEN) plays a key role in supporting SMEs that aim to diversify their funding sources and leverage opportunities offered by European programmes.

Why access to finance matters for SMEs

Access to finance provides SMEs with concrete and measurable benefits, such as:

  • development and testing of innovative products and services;
  • increased competitiveness in national and international markets;
  • acceleration of the internationalisation process;
  • reduction of financial risks associated with initial investments;
  • strengthening organisational and operational capacity;
  • access to new networks of partners, clients and investors.

Moreover, many European funding instruments encourage transnational collaboration, enabling SMEs to increase their visibility, learn from best practices and position themselves within European innovation ecosystems.

The role of the Enterprise Europe Network in supporting SMEs

Against the backdrop of growing interest among Romanian companies in internationalisation and diversification of funding sources, Enterprise Europe Network (EEN) consultants provide dedicated support to SMEs, start-ups and organisations interested in competitive European funding opportunities.

Through tailored information, guidance and international matchmaking services, EEN:

  • helps companies identify relevant funding calls;
  • supports the clarification of eligibility criteria;
  • facilitates the identification of international partners for consortia;
  • increases the chances of success in the application process;
  • provides access to European innovatio and business networks.

A particularly attractive instrument for SMEs is cascade funding, thanks to simplified procedures and shorter evaluation timelines.

Cascade funding – fast and flexible financing for SMEs

Within this framework, we have selected a series of cascade funding opportunities, highly attractive financing instruments for SMEs and start-ups, characterised by:

  • simplified application procedures;
  • short evaluation timelines;
  • high flexibility in implementation;
  • non-reimbursable funding, often in the form of grants or vouchers.

These calls are relevant for organisations interested in innovation, European collaboration and fast access to funding.
