Digital transformation starts with strategy, not technology

Article written by Ana-Maria Paraschiv – External Relations Expert & EEN Advisor, Magurele Science Park Association

In my discussions with entrepreneurs and SME managers, one recurring question often emerges: how can a company accelerate its digital transformation? More often than not, the conversation begins with questions about software solutions, platforms, artificial intelligence, or automation.

However, through my experience within Enterprise Europe Network, I have observed that the real challenge is not selecting the right technology, but clearly defining the business objectives that the company aims to achieve.

Too often, organizations begin their digitalization journey by searching for technological tools before analyzing their internal processes, workflows, or the issues that generate inefficiencies. In reality, digital transformation is not primarily an IT project. It is a process of organizational change and strategic development.

From technology to business objectives

Before investing in a new platform or an AI-based solution, organizations should first answer a few essential questions:

  • What business objective are we trying to achieve?
  • Which processes need optimization?
  • Where do bottlenecks or inefficiencies occur?
  • Which activities consume time and resources without creating value?
  • How will we measure the impact of the investment?

The answers to these questions provide the foundation for selecting the right solutions and reduce the risk of investments that fail to deliver the expected results.

Technology cannot compensate for inefficient processes

Experience shows that many companies are tempted to invest in complex automation or data analytics solutions before establishing well-defined processes and coherent data management practices.

In such situations, technology does not eliminate existing problems—it simply transfers them into a digital environment. An inefficient process remains inefficient, even when automated.

This is why sustainable digital transformation requires organizational clarity, structured processes, and a realistic understanding of the company’s needs before any technology is implemented.

The importance of digital maturity assessment(DMA)

Not all organizations are at the same stage of digital development, nor do they require the same tools.

For some companies, the priority may be document digitalization and the optimization of administrative processes. For others, the next step may involve data integration, advanced automation, or the adoption of artificial intelligence.

For this reason, assessing digital maturity is often the starting point of an effective digital transformation journey. Before investing, companies need to understand their current level of development and identify the direction in which they want to evolve.

The role of innovation ecosystems

To support this process, European Digital Innovation Hubs (EDIHs) provide companies with access to digital maturity assessments, specialized consulting services, technological expertise, and testing opportunities before making investments.

These services help reduce risks and support informed decision-making based on the real needs of the organization.

At the same time, digital transformation should not be viewed in isolation. It directly influences a company’s capacity to innovate, collaborate, and access new markets.

Digitalization and internationalization go hand in hand

Companies that digitalize their processes become more agile, efficient, and better prepared for international collaboration. The ability to use modern digital tools facilitates integration into European value chains and participation in innovation and development projects.

Through Enterprise Europe Network, SMEs can identify technology and business partners, access European innovation ecosystems, and discover opportunities that support long-term growth.

Technology is a tool, not the final goal

One of the most important lessons the business community has learned in recent years is that the success of digital transformation is not measured by the number of applications implemented or by the complexity of the technologies deployed.

Results emerge when technology supports a clear strategy and contributes to achieving concrete business objectives.

The most successful digital transformation projects do not begin with the selection of software. They begin with a clear understanding of organizational challenges, development goals, and the changes required to create value.

When strategy is clearly defined, technology becomes an accelerator of growth and competitiveness rather than simply an infrastructure investment.

👉 Whether your company is at the beginning of its digitalization journey or evaluating its next stage of development, access to relevant information, expertise, and the right partners can make the difference between a simple technology investment and a digital transformation with real impact.

Through Enterprise Europe Network and the PROSME project, the MSP team supports SMEs in identifying opportunities for innovation, digital transformation, and internationalization, facilitating access to European business ecosystems, technology partners, and resources that strengthen long-term competitiveness.

Digital transformation starts with a clear strategy. We can help you identify the right direction for your company’s growth and development.
