We believe that assisting new generations in evolving and becoming acquainted with science should be a goal of a society that constantly aspires to progress. At Măgurele Science Park, we aim to build bridges between students and researchers, and what better way to do this than by inviting them into the very heart of research institutes?
An Unforgettable Experience at ICECHIM Laboratories

Navigating the realm of research can seem challenging, which is why it’s crucial to provide science-enthusiastic children with as much practical information as possible about a researcher’s activities. On April 7, 20 students from The International High School of Informatics Bucharest found answers to their scientific curiosities in the field of chemistry at the National Institute for Research and Development in Chemistry and Petrochemistry – ICECHIM in Bucharest.
The visit to ICECHIM was an in-depth exploration into the world of chemical substances and physics. It began with a presentation of the research teams working at the institute and a brief introduction to Artificial Intelligence and its future implications across various domains.
Following this presentation, the students were divided into groups and toured the research laboratories alongside researchers. Upon learning they could combine certain substances under the guidance of the researchers, they were eager to engage in what one student aptly termed the “magic hour.”
What Did the Students Discover?
During the initial phase of their laboratory exploration, the students learned about the transmission electron microscope (TEM) used for studying polymers and resins. They also delved into laboratory analyses in biology and biochemistry, focusing on fungi, bacteria, and microorganisms. Subsequently, discussions expanded to encompass alternative biocomposites derived from plants and animal waste, as well as encapsulation techniques.

In the final segment of the guided tour, the students visited the biosensor laboratory and the microbiology lab, gaining insights into scanning electron microscopy and its applications.
Recognizing ICECHIM as an institute that actively supports students aspiring to pursue careers in science, the students were informed about internship opportunities available within the institute.
Why Do We Undertake Such Initiatives?
The 2022 PISA studies present an unstable image regarding competency levels in STEM fields, indicating a decline. Given this unfavorable statistic, the European Commission emphasizes the importance of enhancing critical thinking, digital competence, and scientific skills. These competencies are vital for shaping citizens capable of understanding and critically evaluating the complexities of an increasingly technologized world.
Through events like this, Măgurele Science Park is transforming perceptions of science: from an abstract domain to an engaging journey. These initiatives not only allow students to experience science firsthand but also offer unique opportunities to explore their vocations.

Moving Forward with Enthusiasm and Confidence
For the students who joined us on this journey, it was not just about science; it was about perspectives—a call to the unknown, understanding more with each step. We are delighted to be part of this learning process and are grateful to have a solid foundation of research institutes within the MSP community that make such activities possible.
Until we meet again at the next educational activity, remember that to research is to see what everyone else has seen but to think in a way no one else has thought.
